DJ Magazine Jan 2001 Mid Week Breaks Compiled By Afterlife With life more cold then chilled right now Functional bring a much welcome ray of Sunshine. This album just oozes heat with its delicious collection of chilled tunes. Afterlife are Ibiza's real heroes; season after season their charmed beats are the soundtrack to many of our favourite Balearic moments. After the critically acclaimed 'Simplicity 2000' album they can do almost no wrong providing us with tunes to daydream by and fall in love with. This selection of Functional Breaks is outstanding, from the aching flamenco guitar of Planet X to the jazz sample madness of Dr Finks 'Items Found' and the criminally laidback bass lines of Afterlife's own remix of The Spoon Wizards 'Shoe Monkey' Afterlife are the magic that jaded Ibiza needs Go forget the winter, go book your summer flights go get an Afterlife Four and Half out of Five |

Total Station Jan 2001 Midweek Breaks Compiled By Afterlife Rating: **** (out of 5) The first compilation from this Exeter-based label, Midweek Breaks is a subdued affair, at times reminiscent of the acclaimed Café Del Mar collections. Compiled by UK producer Steve Miller, himself an Ibiza regular, this will not appeal to lovers of the banging house fare often associated with the island. However, there's a number of quality tunes here that'll indeed appeal to anyone with a penchant for funky breakbeat and ambient Balearic grooves. Always good to see the SW making its mark on the scene of course. Rating: 4 out of 5

DJ Mag Jan 2001 DJ Pathaan 'Midweek Breaks' has been compiled by one of the leading Balearic producers in the UK, Steve Miller, who DJs and records under the 'Afterlife' guise with vocalist Rachel Lloyd. This seriously well selected album moves from the haunting flamenco guitar of Project X, through the lush production of Lux, building with the funky breakbeat of Dr Fink and The Spoon Wizard to the laid back disco sound of Dr Fink, Before Lux, Project X and Afterlife chill it out again to finish the journey. Space permitting, this would most definitely be in the box! Steve Miller via Functional Breaks Delivers. * * * * /5

| MIDWEEK BREAKS Compiled by Afterlife functional breaks / UK www.fun-1.com As the first compilation released by this Exeter/UK based label, well-known (after just five singles/EPs) for bangin' nu-skool releases, the nature of this disc goes a long way toward establishing their credibility regarding their well-rounded musical taste, open-mindedness and courage. It's chock full of down-tempo pieces from fb artists LUX ("Indica" is pure bliss), PLANET X, DR. FINK and SPOON WIZARD ("Shoe Monkey" funks it up pretty good). In the realm of Balearic there can possibly be no greater honor than to be asked to be asked to headline at the 20th Anniversary of Cafe Del Mar. That's just what DJ/producer Steve Miller and vocalist Rachel Lloyd were doin last summer. As AFTERLIFE, whose incredible (I mean it!) "Falling" and heavenly "Lo Delta" are included here, they've brought together cuts from the label's artists that are meant more for the head and soul than the feet. Treat yourself - you deserve it. 93% | |||
