Beatz and Bobz / Functional Breaks

Exeter based club night Beatz and Bobz has been running in the city's Cavern Club for a few years now, but in the past six months their profile has gone ballistic. This could be due to the wonderfully intimate venue, a crew of concrete residents, or their tight guest DJ policy - but really it's a combination of all three. With the club going at full pelt into 2000, Beatz and Bobz have just announced a Friction residency, which will see the London club bringing their upfront flavas to Exeter four times a year. The next date is Friday 6 May and will feature the DJing skills of Rennie Pilgrem and Danny McMillan. The crew behind the club also launched the Functional Breaks label at the end of last year, which saw The Spoon Wizard kicking things off with his 'Pantaloon' cut. This has recently been followed by another Spoon Wizard rub - 'Shoe Monkey', which is reviewed in this issue. Further plans for the label include an album from The Spoon Wizard, plus look out for the rocking debut release on the label from Silk.
