The success of Exeter based Future Underground Nation's regular breaks night Beatz & Bobz, which has brought some of the finest breakbeat DJs in the country to The Cavern Club, spurred F.U.N. act The Spoon Wizard to write some breakbeat tracks. One of these tracks was Pantaloon, the debut single on F.U.N.'s new breaks label Functional Breaks
Pantaloon has been written and produced by Exeter based producer The Spoon Wizard (AKA Graham Gray) in his home based studio and is the first tune to be produced by him in over twelve months after a break from production after getting bored with the hard house material that he had been writing. As well as writing music for the dance floor, The Spoon Wizard has also authored tunes for other platforms, including computer games and fruit machines. The flip, 'Loon Mix' comes from Cardiff's Phantom Beat's of Plastic Raygun records fame. Pantaloon was licensed to Australian breaks DJ Phil K's mix CD 'Scene not Sound' and reached No 3 in The DJ mag Beats chart. Now heading towards the 20th release FB releases have won support from Afrika Bambaataa, Anthony Pappa, Dave Seaman, Freq Nasty, Hybrid, Hyper, Jody Way Out West, Krafty Kuts, Phil K, Tayo, and Will White (Propellerheads) amongst a host of others. The sound of the label has remained funky and progressive with no darkness. Most successful release to date is FB002 Shoe Monkey from Spoon Wizard. . FB releases have appeared on compilations from Phil K, Dave Seaman, Stanton Warriors, Ashley Casselle, Danny McMillan, Simply Jeff, R-Fresh and General Midi.

Functional breaks have released three CDs 'Midweek Breaks' CD001 a collection of downtempo tracks, CD002 'Beatz & Bobz Vol 1' a club mix from Darren Chapman. The latest release is the first artist album from the label 'Believe Or Suffer' from Spoon Wizard released in April 2002. Our label philosophy remains to release quality breakbeat from local acts and to break new artists from around the world making Functional a global label not only for releases but artists as well.
