While
on tour in the US last October to promote his mix CD 'Beatz & Bobz Vol
1' Darren Chapman teamed up with Florida's breakbeat bad boys 'The Brothers
of Funk' to produce his first record. Three days in the studio with
Johnny, Kimmi (owners of Freakin Music) and Oscar and the first collaboration
between Freakin Music and Functional Breaks is ready to rock the dancefloors
of the world in the shape of 'G13' Mixes come from Functional Break's
Spoon Wizard who funks the tune up, with the other mix coming from Florida
outfit Sensei (who are Johnny Dangerously and electro DJ/Producer BFX)
take tune a bit harder and darker. Sensei will be releasing one of their
own productions 'I'm The Only one' on Functional Breaks in the near
future. G13 gets a full release on Functional Breaks in June 2000 and
was promo'd on vinyl at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami
Florida with excellent reactions.

| Functional breaks, famous for their wicked Beats and Bobs night in Exeter, are consistent with their releases and continue their UK - US connections and collaborations. Darren Chapman teams up with the Freakin label artists Brothers of Funk for a deep, meaty and beaty Breakbeat stormer. Drivin' and relentless this track is a ruthless addition to the dancefloor, comes complete with an excellent Stabilizer mix. 4.5 | ||

| Functional Breaks Sensei's "I'm the Only One" builds into a trancey nu skool breaks as it leads to the drop that's filled with heavy synth washes, deep sub bass, floating vocals, and an acid line that sends you back into the beat. The female vocal sample is on often used but effective oneThe U.K.'s Stabilizer and San Diego, California's B-Side take over the remix duties and offer two different takes on the original theme. Stabilizer gives the track a groovy twist with more vocal usage and a funkier acid line, while B-Side turns in the hardest mix of the three with more focus on the bass line and tribal elements. | ||

| Another strong issue from Functional Breaks, with this being the debut from the Exeter club's resident, Darren Chapman, here in collaboration with Florida's Brothers Of Funk. Delivering perhaps the dirtiest of tracks on the label to date, 'G13' is a fierce and funky techno breakbeat excursion, rolling with a tight build, a neat vocal sample, gnarly mids and all the right ingredients to ignite any dancefloor. Remixes come from The Spoon Wizard and US duo Sensei, but the original is the mix doing all the damage. | ||

Functional Breaks
has been forging strong links with US breakbeat fraternity over the
last 18 months and the fruits of this transatlantic relationship are
at last seeing the light of day. Florida's Freakin crew have leant their
Limey cousins a tough slice of ever-so-trancey electro-breaks which
are laced with an eerie Asian vocal and bassline that would've sunk
every ship in Pearl Harbour on it's own. 4/5 |

| Top quality debut release on Functional by Florida-based electro breaks outfit Sensei, aka deejay Johnny Dangerously and producer BFX. There are three great tracks to choose from on this single caned by Terminalhead. The original is a hard, ravey American style track that still has that groovy Functional Breaks sound. The remixes on the flip are supplied by Californian breaks deejay B-Side and top UK breakbeat artist Stabilizer (him again!!) The Stabilizer's mix is a funky laidback affair with steppy beats and excellent use of the vocals. And B-Side, a talented new artist also releasing tunes on Simply Jeff's Phonomental Records among others, rocks it in a tripped out West Coast style with a driving groove and a thick bassline kicking in. | ||

Sensei is the latest
act to tread the boards of the fast rising Functional Breaks stable.
You may already know him from his wicked remix of the last Functional
tune, 'G13', or his mix of Rennie Pilgrem & Dub Species' 'The Sermon'.
Here he really delivers the goods, adding his touch of electro stylings
to UK sounding bass and acid. The Functional crew picked up on him whilst
touring the States last year and his American influences are plain to
see. This is proper rip roaring gear, if you like it deep and tough
you'll love this. 4½ / 5 |

| The
Florida take on breaks and electro arrives on the decks courtesy of our
FB friends in Exeter. The sound is harder than previous FB releases and
all the more pleasurable it is too. The Stabilizer mix adds a bit of funk
to the bassline, while the third mix comes from San Diego's Ben Hebal.
This third mix is a slightly more progressive and trance like in it's
build up. All three mixes are built around solid breaks and show the worldwide
appeal Functional Breaks are starting to attract. |
